Ashutosh Modi

Dr. Ashutosh Modi is an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K). Before joining IIT Kanpur, he worked at Disney Research Los Angeles and Zurich. Dr. Modi obtained his Ph.D. from Saarland University, Germany. Dr. Modi heads the Exploration Lab at IIT Kanpur and his group works in Generative AI, LLMs, NLP, ML, and RL. His current research interests lie in Legal NLP, Affective Computing, Mechanistic Interpretability for LLMs, Causal NLP, Machine Unlearning, Text-based RL agents for common sense understanding, and NLP for Sign Languages. Dr. Modi’s research has resulted in a start-up (incubated at IITK) in the Legal AI domain. Dr. Modi’s lab has been publishing at top international conferences/journals and papers from his group have received awards at various venues. Dr. Modi has been awarded Google Research India Faculty Award in the year 2022 in the Natural Language Understanding category. Dr. Modi actively engages with the research community and is on the program committees of several top conferences in the NLP and ML domains. He is ML advisor to various start-ups and is part of various Government Committees related to AI progress and policy.
