Kalika Bali is a Senior Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research India, working on AI, NLP, Speech, and Technology for Empowerment. Her research focuses on advancing multilingual technology for low-resource language communities, and for more than two decades she has worked on enhancing human-computer interaction through language technologies, with a particular focus on inclusive tech for underrepresented languages and communities.
She is part of the team working on Project VeLLM (UniVersal Empowerment with Large Language Models), an interdisciplinary initiative aimed at enabling inclusive applications of LLMs for all languages and cultures worldwide. Her research also explores the intersection of gender and technology, and more recently, the societal impact of foundational GenAI models, with an emphasis on multilingual and multicultural AI.
Kalika was featured on the inaugural TIME100 AI list in 2023 for her work on breaking down language barriers and fostering inclusivity in AI.
